Today, a year and a half later, a state contract is being prepared, according to which the STV would get 20 million euro a year. So it will be financed via the budget anyway, it is not independent today either and so the license fee, officially the charge for services provided to the public by Slovak Television and Slovak Radio, becomes even more absurd.
The current government made the license fee into a tax, because it also has to be paid by those who do not watch STV, do not have a TV and even by those who cannot catch the signal. Everybody has to pay, regardless of their income, which makes the license fee the least solidary tax possible – tax per capita. A government, which calls itself social, introduced a 56 euro a year tax, which has to be paid both by the unemployed and by millionaires.
As if that was not enough, licence fees have to be paid by employers for their employees too. On the other hand, what should one expect from a government which starts building a new football stadium to tackle the crisis.
By the way, the abovementioned petition has been extended by further five questions and was already signed by a 150 thousand people. The required amount is 350 thousand and when all of them are put together one day, the people will be able to abolish this ancient relic in a referendum themselves. Without depending on politicians.
