A much bigger problem is, of course, the Roma question, which has successfully been ignored for the last 20 years. Our state is not able to enforce the law everywhere and tolerates injustices in Roma villages. At the same time our “salon intellectuals” managed to bring about a time, where to utter the word Gypsy is almost an offence and someone who only demands a record of crime levels by racial citizenship is a racist.
And the government? It was our Prime Minister who in the year 2002 in his electoral campaign said: “If we are in government, I guarantee that a thief with an axe will not be stronger than the law and we will not care whether the offender is Roma or someone else. We also have the courage to speak about the irresponsible growth of the Roma population.” But these were only empty words again, what else could one expect of a man who was never responsible for anything. The only thing he managed to do was to increase the social benefits given with the birth of the first three children to 75 thousand Slovak crowns. I assume this was part of the fight against the irresponsible growth of the Roma population.
