That, however, really was a long time ago and our nationalists today are more a joke than a political party, which behaves so predictably it is funny. The mechanism is very simple and has been successfully tested many times: 'If some of our scandals cause our popularity to fall, we will come up with something about patriotism.' Great, truly great and has been working for years. Should be recommended as a case study for every political marketing textbook.
The latest patriotic wish-wash is called 'Law to promote patriotism,' which the SNS presented in parliament on Friday the 13th:) According to it the national anthem will have to be played in class every Monday morning (§ 4) and the Slovak Television will, for a change, play it every day around midnight (§ 8), probably as a measure to fight its big market share. The anthem will also be played at cabinet meetings, in parliament, in the local council and in the municipal council too. Maybe we are all to be deafened by the anthem so we can't hear them stealing. All this could work beautifully were it not for Kotleba, at the moment the darkest nightmare of our nationalists. Kotleba is dangerous for two reasons. He is not a Hungarian, the opposite is true, he is quite convincingly playing an even bigger nationalist, and secondly, he can count up to five. This Kotleba tested his own power on Saturday in the Banská Bystrica region and the result is not in the slightest encouraging for the SNS. Kotleba gained more than 10% of all votes and the SNS (and HZD) candidate only 5.3 percent. If Kotleba, just as he announced, really forms his own political party, he will take votes from our nationalists most of all. Combined with the fall in opinion polls caused by the mass of scandals, it is possible that the SNS will not get into the parliament just like in 2002. For Slovakia it would be news worthy of an anthem.
