Fico in isolation

30. 11. 2009   |   translated by Marek Zemaník

What began as a step bordering on ridiculousness is beginning to look serious today. In November 2008, when I announced the creation of Sloboda a Solidarita, I also excluded the possibility of any future cooperation with Smer, the originator of an unprecedented economic and moral slump. More than a few people had grins on their faces back then. Today, a year later, the situation is very different. After us (and based on us) the SDKÚ-DS announced it will not govern with Smer and not long ago the colleagues from KDH followed. Thus, an opposition is beginning to be formed that takes things seriously and that is important.

There are plenty historical examples which show that it is pointless to kiss the asses of the big and powerful hoping that the big and powerful will obey the rules. The most famous example is Hitler, who was given concessions by England and France in a number of ways, including at the Munich conference by sacrificing Czechoslovakia, and we all know how that ended.

It is therefore important to clearly say that while Smer is big and powerful, it does not adhere to even basic moral and often also legal rules, and so we exclude the possibility of any future cooperation with them. After SDKÚ and KDH it is the turn of the Hungarian parties now, SMK or Most or both. Right now they have a great opportunity to show whether they are after governing no matter what, in other words after deals and posts, or after values.

Béla Bugár's statement that he admits the possibility of governing with Smer because he cares about Slovakia and thus acts responsibly is alibistic. When Fico forms the government, he will be so dominant that he will simply ignore Bugár's opinion. Responsibility will vanish, deals and posts will remain. Furthermore, Most has a lot of Slovak voters coming from the SDKÚ and they will not be excited the slightest when they realize that Bugár is willing to govern with Fico and legitimize him that way. Therefore the only smart solution for Slovakia is to exclude Smer from any post-election cooperation. Even though he is big and powerful – if everybody comes together in this effort it can work. Just like it worked in 1998 and 2002, when HZDS won the election, but did not govern.

All that remains are the current coalition partners of Smer. It is widely known that the voters of HZDS are dying out and it will probably not make it into parliament and if Kotleba creates Naše Slovensko (Our Slovakia), SNS will be missing too.
