Traveller Fico

08. 02. 2010   |   translated by Marek Zemaník

As we found out yesterday, our PM is planning a trip abroad. What is surprising is not only the destination (as opposed to his favourites like Belarus or China, he will go to Switzerland), but also the reason for the trip (gathering information about large-scale corruption benefiting the SDKÚ-DS, while at the same time he refers anyone suspicious of 'his own people' to law enforcement structures and talks about the presumption of innocence).

Not that the information about a (possible) corruption scandal benefiting the SDKÚ-DS is not serious. Although all the actions are in the past, it is a big disappointment for many voters. But for the PM to travel personally abroad with the aim of digging around some accounts is, at the very least, tragicomic. In no way do I want to put all Smer-SD voters into the same category (ultimately, the smarter and more polite ones will vote for us), but I dare to say that anyone, who is amazed by this pathetic travelling, must be a proper dimwit.

I remember Robert Fico seriously accusing SDKÚ-DS two years ago from corruption linked to the Branisko tunnel and pompously announcing the filing of ten criminal complaints. Two years have passed and nothing. No indictment, no trial, no incarceration. Quite simply nothing at all. Not to mention all the scandals of his own government, which not only do not make him travel to Switzerland, but are defended by him.

I understand that its election time and that the campaigns can be merciless. But everything can be overdone, for example the destruction of Mikuláš Dzurinda. I am not entirely sure whether it really is in the interest of Smer-SD that Dzurinda is not on top of the candidate list. SDKÚ-DS was at a dead-end and did not know how to keep going, this quandary projected onto opinion poll results. Maybe Fico will manage to get rid of another two-three leading figures after showing some documents he has up his sleeve. But will he gain voters? Will anyone who is disappointed with SDKÚ-DS suddenly vote for Smer-SD? Hardly, it is more likely that SDKÚ-DS (since they have nothing to lose and a lot is at stake) will focus all of its energy on an attack against Smer-SD. Mister Fico's offensive might very well backfire.
